What Is Love?

I’d like to talk about one of the most controversial and emotionally-wrenching subjects that affects everyone: Love. Love has been the subject of countless books, television dramas, movies, songs and pervades all aspects of our popular culture. It is, however, one of the most misunderstood subjects there is. I am no expert in love and relationships but I have learned a little something along the way which I would like to share.

The first thing is that love is not what you think it is. Most people ascribe the term love to romantic love but this is a very limited and superficial view of love. In fact, most people get into relationships hoping that they will get the love they’re looking for but, in the majority of cases, they are disappointed. Why is this? It is because there is no source of love outside of yourself because love is your essential nature. The problem is that most people do not realize this which is why they seek it outside of themselves in the first place. In fact, love is not just your essential nature but also the energy that permeates the entire universe. Let me explain.

In order to understand this I will have to get esoteric and existential. Science says that the universe arose out of a cataclysmic event called the big bang in which energy became matter and has given rise to everything that exists including planets, stars, solar systems and galaxies. But science cannot explain how this happened and what existed before this event. Although it can’t be proven, I believe that all that existed prior to this is a Universal Consciousness which some may call God. This Universal Consciousness precipitated the events that lead to the creation of the universe. But why?

Although this cannot be explained through rational thought I believe that Universal Consciousness wanted to experience itself through creation which is why It gave rise to everything that exists including the conscious beings that we are. The problem is that we have become so engaged in the superficial aspects of our physical life that we have lost touch with who we are which is an aspect of the Universal Consciousness. This is why I believe the purpose of our lives is which is to awaken to the higher aspect of who we are, which is pure consciousness which is an aspect of Universal Consciousness. If we are all conscious beings and aspects of Universal Consciousness, it follows that we are all one.

So what does this all have to do with love? I have already mentioned that we are all one. This applies, not only to all of humanity, but to all of creation, which all arose from the same source. Love is the emotional manifestation of the universal principle of oneness which is why love is an energy which not only permeates the universe but is an essential aspect of the universe.

One may ask why there is so much chaos and turmoil on our planet? This is because we are seeking solutions to our problems in places where they do not exist. We are seeking these solutions outside of ourselves but if we are pure consciousness and aspects of Universal Consciousness then we have all the answers inside of us. We just don’t realize this because we are, for the most part, all asleep to this essential truth. The same is true of love. Because this is our essential nature, it is not something that we can find outside of ourselves in any relationship because we are the source of love.

This is one of the reasons why so many relationships are doomed to begin with and so many fail. The purpose of relationships is to express the unconditional love that we are not to seek it from the relationship. If you enter a relationship in order to seek love, you will never find it because you are looking for something outside of yourself which is your true nature. I will close out this discussion by stating that sexual intimacy is a physical expression of the universal principle of oneness which is why it is one of the most pleasurable acts in human experience.
